Daily River Reports Season 2010......

23rd August
Rain still falling sporadically and forecast for next few days. River fallen back to summer level but still very dirty and prospects poor, particularly in middle and lower river for a few days!
21st August
Rain of yesterday & last night put about 2ft of very dirty water on the gauge at Glasbury. this is probably the minimum required to encourage fish from the estuary [if the're there] to travel and only if the rain keeps going to allow the small spate to be sustained. No fish reported for a few days now, water in lower river has been almost static, but still a few anglers reported at Bigsweir, Cadora and Wyesham. Few fish now showing. Will take a day or two for river to lose its colour in middle and upper reaches!
Mon 16th Aug
Another fish from Wyesham last Tuesday caught by Ray Morris,9lbs and one today [Sat] of 6lbs. Both fish coloured. Still lots of silver Grilse flashing and showing in lower river but no tactics seem to work! Geoff suggests a goldhead....may try that thursday!
Wed 11th Aug 2010
Another fish from Cadora 7 1/2lbs by Brian Betts on a minnow over weekend. 3 fish last week at Wyesham ,8,10 and 4.5lbs and one Monday of 10lbs caught by Steve Boswell on a Mepps just above Redbrook Bridge. Plenty about in l;ower river but not too keen!
Sat 7th Aug 2010
River very quiet, one fish for Jonathon Heron at Wyesham reported but nothing else!
Tues 3rd Aug 2010
Still lots of reports coming in of Grilse in the 3-4lb range in lower river at Bigsweir. Couple of fish reported from Cadora for back end of last week, no dtetails of size and captor!

Fri 30th July 2010
Super fish of about 25 -27lb on spinner by Ken Powell from HDAA water at Luggs Mouth. Late notification of fish from Bigsweir, Cadora, Wyesham, Caradoc and Luggs Mouth take seasons tally to 162

Thurs 29th July 2010
Not received any reports of fish caught in the last week or so. Middle river fallen back again but is still a funny dark brown colour.....algae bloom or what, who knows?? Fish reported seemingly running at Winforton earlier this week. Fresh grilse and colouring salmon seen along with a lost Grilse on the Rectory last Friday. Trout and coarse fisherman are reporting seeing salmon crashing around on a number of beats. Many salmon anglers seem to have put their rods away which leads to a self perpetuating cycle.

Thurs 22nd July 2010
River through now affected by dirty water of latest small spate! Upper and middle probably back in condition for weekend unless more rain. Few late reports, Ken Powell taken a 7lb Grilse on HDAA waters and Coedithyl angler Andy Hould took a 14lber on the 16th!

Wed 21st July 2010
Weekend reports of first three salmon taken on the upper Wye this season at Nyth, Gromain and Rectory all recorded fish. The Nyth fish 12lb was caught by Matt Oliver in the boat pool at Treceyn. River after a very small rise of 12" or so is now falling back and clearing and whilst in good order we don't expect many fish to have travelled. However plenty of reports in middle and upper river of fish seen and connected with, a number report bright fresh grilse!

Mon 19th July 2010
Well rains of last week don't seem to have delivered much, although I guess river below Monmouth will take a day or two to run off. An 8lb salmon is reported caught by a pike angler at courtfield and returned. Wyesham reprts two fish for 17th, both Grisle from Cottage and one for Mike Timmis, a fresh fish of 10lb from Station stream. Lots of fish reported running so theres hope! Another fish was reported lost at upper Bigsweir and Wayne Tyler reports raising a couple of fish at Eardisley.

Mon 12th July 2010
Sorry for no reports for last week, been sitting looking at bones of River Nith for a chjange! Little activity to report with the continued lack of rainfall. Fish to report from Cadora for John Goring 11lb spinning on 6th, another two fish of 8lb & 14lb to the fly at Wyesham Colemans pool for Jonathon Heron, again on 6th. David Revill reports a fish of 7lb taken from Cockpit at Upper Bigsweir.

Sat 3rd July 2010
Late reports from Bigsweir show their total to be 23 for June. Fish below Monmouth seem to be very active in early evening with a number reported lost!

Wed 30th June 2010
Two fish today at Wyesham, one of 9.5lbs from Cottage and a 5.5lbs fish cauhgt by Ray Morris on fly in Coleman's. Total now 35. Very little else to report although a couple of late reports from Coedithyl. on the 21st a fish of 15lb for J Butterworth and another last weeek for Cadora Bob Tombs 6lbs Grilse.

Mon 28th June 2010
While other Englishmen were crying in their lager yesterday evening Mike Timmis at Wyesham had a sealiced 6 lbs grilse from Cottage Pool at 9.30 p.m. He arrived at 6.00 p.m. and it was very hot and dour but in the final hour of daylight the pool came alive with fresh fish , both 2SW and grilse. He had 4 other good pulls but
they seemed to be taking short and maybe only grabbing the whiskers of his size 12 Red Frances. The water is now gin clear and another fish reported from Coedithil.

Thurs 24th June 2010
Two fish taken Tues at Wyesham by Jonathon Heron on a small siver stoat fished on a dropper. 12 and 18lb the larger fish sea liced. Reports that Wyesham is full of fish and other beats below monmouth holding fish, some stale but many Grilse seen. Water has brown algae again and fish reluctant to take!

Sun 20th June 2010
Joe cobley had a fish off his beat at Foy Church a couple off days ago. Estimate 23lbs.and fresh. Darren Jones had three more at Cadora taking their total for the season to 12. Coarse season started with WUF reporting some good catches in the section downstream of Hereford. Holme Lacy 3, Ballingham and Middle Hill Court all recorded barbel catches in the teens (both size and numbers)

Thurs 17th June 2010
4 fish at Wyesham on Monday, no details plus three fish at Cadora on Tuesday and a 12lber at Upper Bigsweir to Matt Rickard. Water now very low and warm all over river

Sat 12th June 2010
Wayne Tyler took a 12lb 2oz slightly coloured hen from Eardisley on a black and yellow Spindle Fly today in dirty water!

Fri 11th June 2010
Three fish reported Wed from Bigsweir was in fact 5 with 4 coming from the rod of Brian James. three of the fish were in the 15 - 17lb range with the other two 6 -8lb. Another two fish 2 fish Wed 15+12lbs and 2 more yesterday from Wyesham 11+9lbs. River now rising and lots of muck coming down. It could be very good Sunday onwards.

Wed 9th June 2010
Reports of running fish off the tide below Monmouth. Fresh 17.5 lbs fish from Station Stream at Wyesham Monday. Further reports from Wyesham with David Harrison catching a 17 lbs fish from Coleman's on a stoats tail and Ray Morris a 6 lbs grilse from Cottage Pool. Many fish seen today some of which were running. Reports also of three fiah at Cadora yesterday for Darren Jones and one today for Barney Price all in the 10-12lb bracket.. Further reports suggest another 3 fish for Bigsweir. Lower river up 3-4" but still in excellent shape. Middle and upper river have seen 12" of very dirty water and with river at Monmouth very heavily weeded no confidence in many fish finding there way upstream, but we can only hope!

Fri 4th June 2010
22lb fish today from Cadora by Darren Jones on spinner.Another seen in play off Bigswier bridge landing unknown! Wyesham reported two fish today, an 18 lbs fish reported from Duke's and Chris Sutcliffe's 12 year old son had a fresh 12 lbs fish from Cottage Pool, both on fly.

Wed 2nd June 2010
Ray Morris had a 10lb sealiced fish from Livox at Wyesham yesterday on fly and Mike Timmis lost a fish in Coleman's. Couple of other fish to report earlier this week at Redbrook and Cadora. Rain of Monday did little to improve river conditions!

Sun 31st May 2010
12lb fish from Colemans at Wyesham today on a size 12 fly. Water still full of algae.
Friday 28th May 2010
Fish reported from Coedithyl and Redbrook last weekend. Jonathon Heron had a 9 lbs fish from Coleman's at Wyesham on Tuesday. Algal bloom has slowed things right down below Monmouth although several fish were been seen yesterday. Water temp has been up to 68F. Middle river also suffering from algae and along with upper river is desparatelky short of water and more importantly fish! Shad now seem to be in every pool. Trout fishing impossible ion some beats due to their [shad] antics!

Sun 23rd May 2010
Bigswier are now on 12 for the season Including a fish caught yesterday, 12lbs by Peter Hickman. Long tailed sea lice. Fish or two were showing in the evening.

Fri 21st May 2010
Another fish for Wyesham a 15 lbs fish Wednesday from Washings Crib on a Mepps by Richard Savage. Another lost in Cottage pool.

Tues 18th May 2010
13lb sealiced fish taken yesterday from Livox at Wyesham on fly and a fish of 8/10lb for Joe Cobley at Foy [Ingeston]. Waters now very low in upper and middle and in desperate need of big spate for water and fish! Lower river in perfect order and plenty of anglers out but where are the fish???

Fri 14th May 2010
Amazingly another fish of 15lb caught yesterday at Eardisly by beat owner Peter on a spindle fly! The fish was slightly coloured and probably been in the river a couple of weeks. Alex Nichol had a 17.5lbs sealiced fish from Cottage poolat Wyesham this morning on the fly. Wyesham are now in double figures (at last!) High tides now and rising pressure. Fingers crossed!

Tues 11th May 2010

First fish for season at Coedithyl on Sunday by John Tarplee on a FC, a fresh fish of 15lb.

Mon 10th May 2010

Fresh fish were caught at Eardisley on Tuesday and Wednesday last week and one lost on Thursday! No reports of any over weekend!!!

Fri 7th May 2010

Lyn Cobley reports a first salmon ever today for Kevin Hunt at Ingeston of 13lb. Another fish was reported yesterday at Cadora of 12lb to Bob Tombs. Occassional fish being seen in middle river but no significant sign of 2SW fish yet! River conditions in upper and middle now very low and lower river just clearing after small rise of early this week. Couple of shad reported caught by salmon anglers.

Wed 5th May 2010

24lb fish reported for Bigsweir on weekend, no details yet. Upper and middle river now clearing again after small rise [12 - 18"] rise of early this week, some running fish reported from lower beats but not yet translated into catches!

Sun 2nd May 2010

2 more fish yesterday from Wyesham. Ray Morris had a fish 11.5 lbs from Oak Tree Crib and George Adams had a fish of 9 lbs from the Island Stream on the Duke's. Another lost. Several seen. Should be the start of the run of smaller 2sw fish as was suggested. Question is how many will there be, will the rest of the river see many once they are spread throughout the system? Some water too now after yesterdays rain, not much really about a foot thats all. Upper catchment seemed to catch very little [rain] so it won't do a lot of good for the middle and upper river and unless we get some more will be very short lived.

Fri 30th April 2010

Another fish today from Ingeston 10lbs by Sol Roberts. Rain has cause little in the way of rise , hopefully more rain forecast over weekend will be more significant.

Thur 29th April 2010

Correction: The fish caught on Wednesday at Wyesham was at least 18lbs and the angler was John Hawkins. It was caught on fly from the Viaduct Pool. Reports of several fish being seen there today and a fish was lost. Their total is now 7.

Wed 28th April 2010

With river low and high pressure dominating, catches restricted to lower river. Bigswier had one fish Monday and one Tueasday. One of their earlier fish confirmed as a kelt. One more from Wyesham and another from Ingeston by Darren Jones again, he had 4 now this season! Much needed rain forecast for this weekend, lets hope its a good downpour!

Fri 23rd April 2010

Michael Timmis reports from Wyesham that Ray Morris had a 15 lbs fish on the fly on Monday and Nigel Smith had a cracking 26 lbs fish on Tuesday. Both sealiced. No other fish reported....where's that rain!

Mon 19th April 2010

2 more from Ingeston today by Darren Jones again. 18 and 12 - the latter sea liced. Spinning.

Sun 18th April 2010

A fish of 20lb reported for visiting angler J Kellam of Luton at Ingeston and 2 fish for gillie Shane Stanley at Courtfield one of which was in high 20s! Number of gillies in lower and middle river reporting little or no fish activity and only fish being caught seem to be those seen and fished at! Upper and middle rivers now need prolonged spate for fish to arrive and with no rain forecast over next 5 to 7 days even lower river will struggle waiting for few fish to arrive with tides. Prospects continue to remain poor. On the positive side some massive hatches of grannom reported on both middle river around Maesllwch and lower river at Upper Bigsweir, although reports also say little fish activity with them! Probably means fish are gorging themselves on pupae!

Fri 16th April 2010

Tim Redesdale had a cracking 20lb+ lbs sea liced fish from Cottage Pool at Wyesham yesterday and David Thompson followed with an 8lb fish at Carrots.

Wed 14th April 2010

Correction the fish caught at Luggs Mouth on 10th was by George Mason. Further fish 0f 15lb taken on 9th at Holme Lacey No 1 by Gil Freisle on a red & white Wye minnow! Wysham broken duck in good water on Monday with Jonathon Heron taking 3 fish of 18, 23 & 9lb, the first two covered in sea lice, all taken on 2" cascade copper tube in the pipe! A few fish seen travelling so maybe better results to come.

Mon 12th April 2010

Further fish reports. The rod from Holme Lacy 3 on Saturday had 2 nice fish, 20lb and 12lb. Darren Jones took a 12lb fish at Ingeston. One one from Luggs Mouth I understand and one from Lower Winforton, on a fly by James Griffiths. 20lbs plus. Not heard of anything else at the moment.

Sat 10th April 2010

Another fish reported caught yesterday at Cadora. 12lbs Bob Tombs on a flying C. River much too high there really. No other reports, no fish being seen.

Fri 9th April 2010

9 days gone in April and first fish reported for month! Gerry Lewis reports a fresh fish of 18lb for George Mason at Luggs Mouth on the 7th!. Water conditions in middle and upper river still holding up and would expect lower river to come into shape for weekend!

Thurs 8th April 2010

Late news of a terrific cock fish of 27lb caught on 31st March by gillie Tony Mobley. The fish was caught on a red & white flying C at Golden Mile whilst the river was high and very coloured. See a great picture in our photo gallery!!

Wed 7th April 2010

Upper & middle river now in super condition [and not many canoes]. Wind is a problem for fly fishers but water height must augur well for catches!. Nothing to report this week yet. I fished Letton yesterday and took another well mended kelt and had one very good take which came to nothing! Both on sink tip and black & yellow tube!

Sat 3rd April 2010

No fish to report. River risen up to 3ft with all rain we have had this week. Forecast suggests it may well clear a little and fishing should be possible in upper reaches from Monday. Middle and lower river will be out for a little longer. Total for March of 9 was 30 less than last year which ityself was poor. Hope current will bring some fish up and we can allstart seeing some action.

Sat 27th March 2010

Another fish for Wayne Tyler yesterday, this time a very feisty, full bodied 14lb 10oz fresh fish [see photo gallery] from Shadey Pool on the Eardisley beat, caught again on She was caught on a spindle fly. Wayne reports the fish had what llooked like net marks. River up 2ft and further rain forecast for Sat/Sun.

Mon 22nd March 2010

Well mended kelts from still being taken from Upper Bigsweir, Garnons etc over the weekend, one whopper from Garnons but not weighed. Fresh fish seen running through pools on 2 ft dirty rise.

Sat 20th March 2010

Rain over Welsh hills caused a rise of about 2ft but now beginning to fall back. More rain forecast tomorrow/Mon so upper river may take day or so to recover. Middle will be OK for Tues/Wed I guess, unless a real downpour and lower river will be out until next weekend!. No more fish reported, although still a number of well mended kelts from 5lb to 18lb being taken.

Thurs 18th Mar 2010

Lower river in first class order but little or no fish activity. Highest tide of year tomorrow may bring some action. BJames took a 10lb fish at Bigsweir on Wednesday. Upper river now in desperate need of some water, forecast rain up to and over weekend may bring some but not looking good so far!

Wed 17th Mar 2010

Season total now 7 with a further three fish reported. The opening day of the salmon season produced the first Wye fish – a 7lb sea-liced springer in the afternoon from Redbrook. Our congratulations go to Mr. Davies wins a bottle of Pol Roger from WUF. The other two fish were caught at Bigsweir.... Geoff Handley had the very good fortune of getting down on the river for the third time this year as a friend had gone off to Argentina to try his luck after large seatrout, he should have stayed as he may have been the one to catch a cracking fresh salmon of about 18lb on the Llandogo beat . Geoff had waited until mid day due to a big tide and caught his fish on a flying C. Mr John Turner al;so had a 10lb fish from Pilstone also that morning just after the tide, so there was obviously a few coming in.

Sun 14th Mar 2010

Report from Wayne Tyler......This morning (Sunday). I fished two pools which have been previously unproductive for me but have apparently been historically successful when the river produced large numbers of fresh fish - with the water absolutely gin clear and unbearably cold, together with a strong and cold North Westerly wind, I didn’t hold out much hope.A few casts into the first pool I hooked and landed a 17lb fresh beauty. A fighting fit hen which swam away brilliantly after a few minutes of catching her breath (the second 17lb fish from Garnons this year after my brother’s out of season fish whilst piking a couple of weeks ago). I moved downstream 100yds to the next pool to try my luck. After 10 minutes I had a nicely mended kelt in the net and quickly on her way back downstream. Approximately another 20 minutes had passed when I landed another fresh fish, this time in the 12lb bracket but again fantastically silver and fit. This one jumped and tail walked her way across the pool several times before giving herself up. She took a while to recover but did release eventually to an audience of applauding ramblers !! These were the first salmon caught on these pools for many years I am told. An interesting note for other anglers who may be interested – the three fish caught this morning were all hooked on the same lure – a large home tied spindle fly fished very deep and very slowly on a fairly light spinning rod. All caught between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. in very deep water. Anyone

Sat 13th March 2010

Not a lot to report, I lost a fish today at Letton, not sure but it was probably a Kelt and there is a report of another lost at Pwyll-y-faedda. Barbel anglers on Red Lion report a number of fish showing and a couple lost by anglers trotting maggots!! We need some more water now or we will be left to fish for whats in the river. Forecast still shows no significant rainfall!

Tues 9th Mar 2010

River still in good nick although upper and middle above Garnons very clear, biting easterly keeping angling effort low. Second fish for season taken by Mrs Brett, again at Ingeston fishings, 18lb approx taken on a silver Toby.

Sat 6th Mar 2010

First Wye fish reported caught this morning by Jerry Stoehr, gillied by Lyn Cobley at Ingeston. Weight 15lb returned safetly [see photo in our Photo Gallery].

Fri 5th Mar 2010

Plenty of kelts being caught up and down the river from Middle Hill Court and Ingeston to Letton but no reports yet of fresh fish although lots of anglers out, particularly below Monmouth!. This weekend seem like it will give many anglers a chance with good weather and river conditions so come on win that bottle of champagne! With little or no rain forecast upper & middle river particularly will be very low next week limiting chances to lower river for a whilst.

Wed 3rd March 2010

Just to add some spice to todays opening, to follow the superb sea trout of 7lbs taken by a pike angler the 'first' salmon of 2010 is also reported to have been landed on the river at the top end of Garnons water by Glen Tyler on a large pike plug, not on a float fished deadbait as I previously reported. The fish weighed 17lb and was safely returned.

Tues 2nd March 2010

Opening day Prospects from Geoff Franks.......

River conditions look good throughout the river for the Wye's opening day on Wednesday. Perhaps a little low on the upper river but generally levels and colour are fine and it looks likely that the chance of an 'early' fish could come from almost anywhere this year.

Mon 1st March 2010

Reports of 7lb sea trout caught on 21st Feb at Ross by a pike angler Mark Surman on a deadbait. Fish photographed [see Photo Gallery] and returned

Friday 19th Feb 2010

Upper river level beginning to look a bit thin but some snow in hills of Wales may raise levels next week. Reports of kelts showing along length of middle and lower river and some suggestions of springers, lets hope so!! Some good barbel catches reported around Ingeston during recent very cold spell.

Tues 9th Feb 2010

Some good catches of pike being recorded including 4 fish best 22lb in an hour and a quarter spell by Geoff Franks on Sat below Hereford on ledgered herring!

Sun 31st Jan 2010

Hi everybody and a happy new year.

Took a fly rod to Letton yesterday [Sat] hoping for the odd Grayling, more a case of getting out of the house! River in good shape, some 6ins above winter level and slightly coloured. Winter floods seem to have not done much damage, lets hope same can be said of spawning grounds! Saw little apart from the usual Cormorants and Gosanders. If anyone wishes to give me info regarding the river and catc hes please email me on lettonone@yahoo.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mon 19th Oct 2009

Ian Thorpe owner of Golden Mile took a fish on both Fri and Sat last week both fish about 12lb and returned.

Last day.......couple of fish reported for earlier in month with one at Pwll y faedda on 11th Oct (12lb on fly) and one for Abernant on 9th (10lb hen on Allys shrimp). Looks like total is going to be less than 530......half of last seasons reported catch...disaster!

Thurs 15th Oct 2009

Season now in its dying days , couple of fish reported but generally little being seen or caught. Syndicate rod John Hutcheon had a small cock of 6lb on Monday at Golden Mile from 'planks' and John Symonds reports Wyesham having one fish each day this week with a 21lber on Monday from Cottage Pool and a 10lb hen on an usk grub from Halfway House crib today. Gerry Lewis at Caradoc reports a few earlier fish - Sept 2nd CARADOC J Edwards 16lbs Top Croy. Sept 8th LUGGS MOUTH Gill Fresle 8lbs Pylon pool.

One not reported before June 10th HOARWITHY Whirly Hole 8 lbs. Very little action otherwise and Charles Davies reports fishing Luggs Mouth yesterday, and at Eign this morning (HDAA) perfect fly water tried everything but not a sign of any salmon!!!!!!! The only rods catching seem to be the barbel

anglers!

Sat 12th Sept 2009

Fish of 9lb caught off Rocks at Rectory yesterday. Upper river now gin clear. Middle river in prime condition, however fish almost impossible to find! Rods fishing Ty Newydd Thursday and Red Lion/Moccas/Letton Court Wednesday and Friday made no contact and saw no fish moving!

Thurs 10th Sept 2009

At last a fish to report ! Gillie Tony Mobley at Golden Mile reports yesterday, beat owner Ian Thorpe returned a cock fish of 13lbs taken on a Red Francis fly at Top Crib.

Tues 8th Sept 2009

Water conditions on upper and middle river perfect, number of anglers fishing around Bredwardine however report no signs of fish. Please, please let us know if you have any reports. Given fish good water should hold in middle river over coming weekend and lower river should be producing by Sunday.

Thurs 3rd Sept

Michael Timmis email confirms Wyesham are up to 88 fish for season with 3 on Monday and on Tuesday (Sept 1st), others lost. None of them fresh fish so where had they been hiding these last 4 weeks?

Tues 1 Sept 2009

Few reported from upper river over weekend including Llanstephan and Llyn Em and one lost on rectory. Reports coming in of a couple of decent days on the lower river with some clean fish finally playing ball before this rise, Bigsweir now report 141 for season (34 for Aug). Matt Oliver reports Nyth on 18 fish for season but August was a disaster with no fish recorded. Conditions often looked perfect but there were simply few fish around!

Sun 31st Aug

No reports of fish over weekend. Few (it would seem small) fish seen showing at Letton but water colour very dark peat like! August total for river 21 fish...dreadful! Plenty of canoe activity on bank holiday including another collision with a wading angler......someone is going to get killed!!

Fri 28th Aug 2009

John Symonds reports a 6lb fresh cock fish caught on Island Stream (Dukes at

Wyesham) by Andrew Pease with a Cascade variant. Rise of 12" or so yesterday may encourage few fish to work their way upstream and those difficult Grisle to take a fly!

Tues 25th Aug 2009

Michael Timmis says not much to report recently at Wyesham but they had 2 yesterday on fly and lost another. Both fish around 8/9lbs. One from the Bull's Back, the other from Rabbit Holes. Neither of them fresh. Ray says there are plenty of fish on the Beat, mainly stale but a few fresh grilse about. Their total is now 80 for the season.

Mon 24th Aug 2009

Yesterday must have seen near 50 fish reported showing from 6am through till 2.30 at Bigsweir but only one hooked and lost, fish mainly 4-6 lb'ers with the odd big one amongst them. This tallies with other lower/middle river reports, fish there but not taking. Probably waiting for some water. Rest of the river dead!.

Fri 21st Aug 2009

Last few weeks dry spell has resulted in river falling below normal summer levels with no realistic prospect of much improvement in weather forecasts. Salmon catches as is usual in August very low with only two fish reported, both at Caradoc. Gerry Lewis reports fish of 7lb on August 7th and 9lb on 9th both spinning at Ash tree.

Thurs 13th Aug 2009

Geoff Franks had a fish yesterday at Glanwye.........Old hen springer of about 15lbs, as he described it, in pretty good condition (see photo in gallery) on size 10 Usk Grub.. Looks like the last three weeks of running water has made little difference to the upper river with only a handfull of fish reported as far as I know since it fell away again. The same old story. Reports off fish in the lower river which then fail to materialise. Whilst its obvious that fish numbers are low is there I wonder another reason why fish are going 'missing'.? There were reports of signs of poaching and with no enforcement these days perhaps someone is having an easy ride. Anyone seen any signs or have any suspicions as to where there might be poaching activity?

Mon 10th Aug 2009

Super water conditions in upper and middle river but where are the fish....has someone strung a net across the river at Ross and taken the run??? At the bottom end of the Wye the river level has dropped to a good level for spinning but it is still coloured below the Monnow. Wyesham have caught 74 fish so far this season including a a 6lb fish in Cottage Pool yesterday. Latest news from Bigsweir is that they caught 3 on Friday making season total 111.

Fri 7th Aug 2009

Water still in perfect order and expect lower river to start producing. One fish caught today from Glanwye. Coloured hen of about thirteen pounds but considering the recent water and conditions pretty poor result, no other fish to report! They still don't appear to be there in any numbers do they?

Wed 5th Aug 2009

Water in upper and middle river looking perfect, prospects for weekend very good so get out there. Couple of fish of 8lb and 15lb caught at Gromaine and Rectory on Monday both on fly.

Sun 2nd Aug 2009

As forecast on the website the Golden Mile was in good condition on 28th for the first time in weeks. Two rods down and they both caught a salmon. Beat owner Ian Thorpe had a 9lber and Barney Price had a 10lber. By lunchtime the river was rising and that was it untill heaven knows when! Total for The Mile is now 8

Wed 29th july 2009

Upper river just fishable yesterday but heavy rain overnight and today has brought spate of circa 4foot at Glasbury. Forecast is not much better, so get the DIY and tackle repairs ready for mid next week!

Mon 27th July 2009

River, which has been up and down like you know what, is now beginning to settle although more heavy rain forecast for Weds! No reports of catches, although I am sure there must be some, shouldn't there? Geoff Franks lost a good fish on a flamethrower ( fly not alternative method) Sunday evening and Charles Davies reports a number of fish heading and tailing upstream near Hereford old bridge today.

Wed 22nd July 2009

Upper river fell to good fishing conditions yesterday and Simon Evans of WUF and his guest took the opportunity to land a couple of smallish fish (8lb & 10lb) at Rectory. Another fish was caught at Pwll y faedda before rain and another small rise took grip. Middle river was just coming into condition before rise and will now be Thurs before conditions improve.

Mon 20th July 2009

More rain on Sat & Sun helped to keep river big and dirty over weekend but is now beginning to clear and should be fishable 'just' on upper & middle beats

Tues/Wed. However more rain forecastfor Wales on Tues/Wed& Thurs so you may have to be quick if you want to see if there are fish moving up!

Fri 17th July 2009

Well we wanted a big spate and its here! River peaked 1.30pm today at 2.6m on Glasbury gauge (1.8m or 6 foot above summer level) in a very dirty spate. More showers forecast today and over weekend will ensure it is fairly slow to subside and hopefully those fish waiting in channel will begin to find their way upstream. upper river will probably not come into shape until at least Mon/Tues with middle needing 'til Thurs/Fri.

Fish numbers at Bigsweir for season so far are 107 with several rods having caught three or four fish per day, before spate including Sam Miller, Phillip Mackie and Richard Stevenson. Signs of some grilse, but only catching a few. Most fish in the 10-12lb range and a few running up to 20lbs. Bigsweir also report a few sightings of smolts coming down!

Wed 15th July 2009

Half a dozen fish at Bigsweir to spinner Mon/Tues in coloured water. Two days of infrequent but heavy showers have put the upper Wye into a good spate today. WUF Erwood gauge went under for the first time since the middle of May at lunchtime. It will likely still be too big tomorrow and with further rain in the forecast for Friday the middle and lower river are likely to have a significant rise and it is uncertain when the upper river, let alone the middle or lower river will be fishable. When it is we would expect prospects to be be much improved.
